National Archives - Making the Census Happen
As England and Wales prepare for Census 2021 on 21st March, the National Archives explores how the ambitious data-gathering exercise records details about the population as a whole.
The featured blog examines how the census creates a huge quantity of information that has to be collected, sorted and studied and how, exactly, it happens.
Since 1801, there has been a census conducted in England and Wales every 10 years. This survey gives the government the most accurate picture of the country and is a fascinating reflection through time.
